I RETURN TO BETHEL
Genesis 35:1 “Then God said to Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an alter there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”
And so Jacob returned to Bethel. In this God fulfilled a major part of Jacob’s prayer in Gen 28: 20-22. The significance of this return cannot be overstated. Jacob had fled from the wrath of his brother having cheated him, and lied to his father depriving Esau of his blessings. In the same breath he had been the one God had chosen to be His touch bearer and the line of promise. Jacob was continuing what his grandfather and father had embarked on before him. During the time of his sojourn, he had learnt many lessons by experience, acts and omissions. He had learnt the lessons of life and death(His fleeing from Esau and Laban…see Gen 27:41; and Gen 31:23) He had learnt the act of negotiation(Gen 30) the art of managing in lack, prospering in hope, hearing God, making a vow, courting a wife; parenting children; balancing his responsibilities; reconciliation; wrestling with God, understanding his wilderness; walking in the path of his destiny, and fulfilling God’s plan and purposes in his life, containing his anger, and keeping peace in the face of defilement(Gen 34: 5); been cheated, and building a place of worship and prayer for God. All these , over a period of time. Indeed Jacob had become matured and of age.
Jacob’s journey is to some extent similar to the journey of NCC Edmonton so far. An almost condemned becoming the redeemed of the Lord. A nobody becoming a somebody. An Obed- Edom becoming the blessed. Tracing the journey from a small household, through an oversized school, to the community hall, and then the warehouse, God has indeed helped us to return to Bethel, a place where we can hear God speak and where we can worship Him. We have learnt the lessons just like Jacob, and now we are in for the blessings. See Genesis 35:10-12. As we move into our new building we take a name change, we have become the Prince of God, we shall be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from us, and kings shall come from our body. Amen.
ACTION POINT: We therefore need to birth these blessings through prayers and fasting; starting from the 18th of September to the 24th of September, there shall be a continuous fasting and praying to the glory of God. Further arrangements will be announced in due course.
Finally this land and building is reclaimed for Jesus. It was built in 1908 for Jesus, went though many hands, but thank God, after a hundred years, it is back in God’s hands. It shall never and will never leave God’s hands. Amen.
